Aloe is a thickened juice derived from the leaves of various Aloe species. It belongs to the Liliaceae family and is indigenous to regions such as southern Africa, Egypt, India, and Mediterranean countries with a similar climate. In commercial trade, Aloe is often named after its place of origin.

The process of extracting Aloe involves extracting the juice by cutting the leaves and allowing it to dry in the air. Alternatively, an Aloe extract can be obtained by boiling the dried leaves and evaporating the resulting decoction. This extract is considered inferior and is primarily used in medicine due to its high concentration of bitter substances.

Two main varieties of Aloe can be distinguished based on their appearance, although there are also mixed forms. The first variety, commonly sourced from Capeland, has a shiny appearance because it is dried over a fire. However, prolonged storage may cause it to melt if it contains a significant amount of salt, which is considered an impurity. The second variety, known as "Leberaloe," has a dull, resinous, leathery brown exterior. Aloe sold under the name "Aloe Mosselbay" is a type of Kapaloe, while Port Elisabeth is another region in South Africa where it is produced but further east.

Aloe contains aloin, an anthraquinone pigment. The percentage of aloin varies between 5% and 40% depending on the variety. Different types of aloin are designated with a prefix corresponding to the origin of the Aloe variety (e.g., Kapaloin). Additionally, aloinosides, which are glycosides of aloin, and aloeemodin are also present. Nitric acid can be used to extract chrysamic acid from Aloe, which appears as yellow leaflets when dried and dissolves in boiling water with a red color.

Chrysamic acid is primarily employed for dyeing wool and silk. When combined with soda ash, untreated wool can be dyed blue or blue-gray, depending on the concentration of the dye bath. The resulting shade of blue is somewhat similar to indigo, but with a slightly reddish hue due to Orseille. In leather dyeing, chrysamic acid was utilized for achieving yellowing effects. Silk can be dyed with chrysamic acid, resulting in shades ranging from purple to rose red, and with a more diluted dye bath, various shades of pink can be obtained. Although chrysamic acid allows for other color variations, it is also commonly referred to as "aloe purple."

Untreated Aloe readily dissolves in warm water and can be used to dye fabrics in yellow and brown tones, although the colors are not very lightfast. Without mordant salts, wool dyed with Aloe appears dark brown, while alum produces a reddish light brown hue. Ferrous sulfate yields maroon colors, and post-treatment with potassium bichromate darkens the browns. Due to the low lightfastness of Aloe-dyed textiles, it is often combined with other dyes. Aloe solutions in nitric acid are also utilized for dyeing wood, resulting in shades of yellow or resembling mahogany.

Product Data Sheet

Product: Aloe capensis, powder

Origin: South Africa

Protected species (CITES): yes

Harvest: wild gathering

Fertilization: no

Time of harvest: April – June

Identity: complies

Cleaning: manually

Drying: drier

Degree of crushing: ground

Pharmacopoeia: complies to Ph.Eur. 2.8.13

Pesticides: complies

Chlorpyrifos and -methyl: < 0.01 mg/kg

Heavy metals: lead, cadmium, mercury: tested

Microbiology: complies to Ph.Eur, herbal medicines, Cat. However, the use of amber Colophony in the preparation of oil paints presents some unique characteristics. Firstly, it is necessary to have a reliable source of high-quality amber, as its purity and properties can vary significantly. We have found that the processing of amber Colophony can be complicated and require the use of specialized equipment. Despite these disadvantages, we have seen that the use of pyrolyzed amber can bring numerous advantages in the preparation of high-quality oil paints. Paints containing pyrolyzed amber have greater wear resistance, adhesion, and durability over traditional oil paints. In addition, amber Colophony can improve the transparency and brightness of the paint, giving paintings a more vibrant and brilliant appearance. In summary, Grandi Liutai is satisfied with the use of amber Colophony in the preparation of oil paints, which may require some attention and expertise but can lead to extremely satisfying results. When used correctly, amber Colophony can significantly improve the quality and durability of oil paints, giving paintings a more vibrant, brilliant, and long-lasting appearance.

All fingerboards come unstained and produced in Italy.

Grandi Liutai Italiani Ebony fingerboards for violin are considered among the best in the world, thanks to their durability, sound, and aesthetic beauty. African ebony is a dense and resilient wood that does not easily deteriorate and withstands wear and tear well. In addition, it is known for its acoustic properties, making it perfect for use in the fingerboards of bowed musical instruments.

Ebony fingerboards are available in various qualities, depending on the wood's origin and processing. High-quality fingerboards are typically made from wood sourced from the tropical forests of Africa, where ebony grows naturally. The wood is selected for its density, uniform grain, and dark color, which gives the fingerboard a smooth and glossy finish.

Crafting ebony fingerboards requires great artisanal skill. The wood must be selected and cut precisely to follow the grain perfectly.

In addition to their beauty, ebony fingerboards for violin also offer acoustic advantages. African ebony is known for its ability to transmit sound vibrations evenly and precisely, producing a clear and brilliant sound. We are pleased to confirm that the ebony fingerboard is a component of the highest quality that contributes to the sound and performance of the violin. The fingerboard is made of ebony wood, a material known for its durability, resistance to warping, and superior tonal characteristics. The dark color and elegant grain of ebony give a refined aesthetic look to the violin, ensuring a touch of class and elegance. We particularly appreciate the precision and craftsmanship of the ebony fingerboard. The size and curvature of the fingerboard have been carefully studied to ensure optimal playability and accurate intonation of the chords. The frets are accurately positioned and finely polished, allowing for smooth and easy playability. The ebony fingerboard for 4/4 violin also provides a smooth and comfortable surface for the violinist's fingers. The touch of ebony wood is pleasantly velvety, facilitating finger movement and providing a sense of control and stability during performance. The ebony fingerboard for 4/4 violin is compatible with most violin models available on the market. Its precision and quality construction make it an excellent choice for both professional musicians and students looking to improve their musical skills.
Wide version: 2.5 mm edge spacing

Proper spacing of strings on the upper nut of the violin is a must, both from functional and esthetic point of view. Proper spacing involves correct and even outside gap from the fingerboard on both sides (G and E string) and even spacing of the strings mutually (see the diagram). Depending on the diameters of single strings in the set, the groove axes are unique for every type of the string set.

We made this time-consuming task easy:

Just attach the appropriate template and use a file for string grooves, marking the upper nut.
Cold-rolled

Made of spring steel

Scraper blades are indispensable for smoothing wooden surfaces, removing marks left by planing and routing, cleaning glued joints and levelling uneven varnish coats. Sharpened properly and burnished with a fine hook, they are capable of removing the finest shavings and leaving a smoother and more precise surface finish than can be attained by grinding. By varying the pressure, angle and curvature of the scraper, you can achieve superb results even against the grain (knotty wood, inlays, parquet etc.).
Thanks to the use of stainless steel, this scraper blade is permanently protected against patches of rust caused by hand perspiration. It is also three times more durable than spring steel scrapers.

Hot-rolled - the entire material is elastic and has an even structure

Made of stainless steel

Precise 90° longitudinal edges without burr achieved by water jet cutting process

100 x 50 mm

Herdim Scraper Blades

Scraper is an important tool for violin maker, sometimes not receiving the consideration it deserves. Therefore we used scraper materials which feature better corrosion resistance of the cutting edge, and ideal proportion of the hardness and ductility to form a durable and finest cutting burr. The two materials cover all possible utilizations. Best cutting edge lies always along the longer side of the scraper blade.

What is unique about the new Herdim scrapers?

Conventional carbon steel scrapers are usually made of cold-rolled carbon steel sheets. The combination of the carbon content and cold rolling creates the desired hardness of the scraper. However, this technology creates uneven hardness along the thickness of the sheet and produces a very different steel structure along versus across the rolling direction in the sheet.

The Herdim scrapers are made of a hot-rolled sheet, which creates a more consistent structure of the steel with less differences along and across the rolling direction. The tempering used during the hardening procedure enhances ductility and thereby also the quality and fineness of the cutting burr.

The Herdim stainless steel scrapers utilize the unique feature of the austenitic structure of stainless steel - the high wear-resistance. The austenitic structure of stainless steel is, compared to the ferritic structure of carbon steel, much more wear-resistant. The less fine cutting burr is outweighed by its durability.

The cutting edges of chisels are delicate and can easily be damaged by, or damage, other tools that they come in contact with during storage and transport. If the edges become damaged, it will take time to sharpen and hone the blade to the point that it can be used again. Most chisels are delivered with edge guard caps, but these can be easily lost. So we offer here a full selection of plastic edge guard caps. Price is per guard!

Important: Care must be taken to ensure the chisels are dry when put into plastic caps. Water can be trapped between the plastic and the chisel, and will corrode the blade. This is especially important with high-carbon steel blades.

These caps will fit other western chisels too. They work well enough aside from mortise chisels and some of the lines of firmer chisels.

Chisel NOT included!

The Rondo RO100 set is prized by professional musicians and soloists for its unique intensity and wide dynamic range with reliable response. These strings enrich ancient and modern instruments tonally with intense depth, bright contour, and sweetness - sonic qualities mostly associated with older Italian instruments.

The Rondo line of strings offers an alternative RO02A A-string for players who traditionally prefer steel core A-strings. This chrome steel string is extremely resistant to corrosion and offers exceptional tuning stability (fine tuner recommended).
This extremely light oil is extracted from the leaves of the Japanese camellia tree and a superb corrosion inhibitor for tools of all kind. Camellia oil is not susceptible to resinification and may also be used for cleaning, sharpening and lubrication purposes. The oil contains a small amount of high-purity liquid paraffin. Thus the oil is water-repellent and shows an extreme resistance against acids e.g. hand sweat. It is non-toxic (paraffin is often used in the cosmetic industry) but not food-safe. Not suitable for direct contact with food and Japanese kitchen knives. For that purpose we recommend the food-safe Sinensis Camellia oil

Versatile, light oil from the seeds of the camellia tree.

Corrosion protection: Camellia oil is acid-free, non-volatile and not susceptible to resinification, making it the ideal oil to protect tools, knives and weapons from rust. Made from pure natural plant products and food safe, it is ideal for preserving kitchen knives made of carbon steel.

Wood protection: When applied to wooden surfaces, it is absorbed quickly due to its low viscosity. Once absorbed, it helps protect the wood from damage by moisture, dirt and UV light. Clear, not discolouring, it emphasizes the wood's natural beauty. Non-hardening.

Body care: Camellia oil makes an excellent base for the preparation of lotions, creams and soaps for cosmetic use. As a massage oil or hair oil, it has for ages been found irreplaceable by Japanese geishas.

Medium-coarse grit lime sandstone, very open texture, with good honing properties. From the Amakusa region.

Japanese Natural Stones

""A blade and sharpening stone must be as perfect a match as bride and groom"" according to legendary blacksmith, Shigeoshi Iwasaki. Finding the ideal pairing is no easy task in either case. Despite the excellent performance of synthetic stones, many experienced sharpeners still prefer natural stones for sharpening their finest blades. Japanese sharpening stones are particularly renowned for their effect to harmoniously sharpen hand-forged carbon steels. They can bring a blade’s full potential to the fore and allow the sharpening process itself to become a pleasant ritual. The finest stones from the Honyama quarries are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire - we take great pleasure in still being able to offer these rare treasures. Natural Japanese stones may only be used with water and must be kept protected from frost. Please note that the stones may have slight natural imperfections and may vary somewhat in size.

Grit 400-800

Dimensions: 150 x 45 x 30 mm medium

                   220 x 60 x 70 mm large

This strop block is ideal for polishing (stropping) cutting edges of knives and razors, as well as chisels or plane blades. The synthetically produced surface has no wave, and so the tools can be honed in all directions. Thanks to the different colour coding and grit specifications that are laser etched on the underside of the acrylic strop block, the polishing emulsion that is to be used on the surface can be immediately identified. The colour of the label on the bottle of the different polishing emulsions corresponds with the colour of the related strop block. Comes without poly emulsion.

Dimensions 210 x 70 x 20 mm

Combination sharpening stone with two different grits.

Missarka Sharpening Stones

The Missarka sharpening stone is made of white aluminium oxide* in a vitrified bond created by a sintering process. Thanks to its hard bond, the stone stays flat for longer time. It is ideal for high-alloy tool steels. The tool steels made of alloy components with a coarse grain structure (e.g. chromium and vanadium) require a stone that does not wear quickly. It is possible to hone with both water and oil (but after use with oil you can no longer use it with water). The stone can be permanently kept in water.

* Abrasive used for 150 grit = green silicon carbide

Dimensions 200 x 60 x 25 mm
