Larch Turpentine, occasionally referred to as 'Venice turpentine,' is a notably dense resin. Its distinctiveness lies in its extraction from the core of the larch tree, deviating from the usual practice of harvesting from the bark. Moreover, it lacks the abietic acid crystals that may tint alternative turpentines. Traditionally employed in varnish production, it is not advisable for use as a final varnish. Its viscosity increases over time in storage.

The Pine turpentine essence is a natural essential oil extracted through distillation and rectification from the balsamic resin of pine trees. This essence reacts with water and atmospheric oxygen, initiating an oxidation process that leads to the formation of acids. This reaction can result in the corrosion of tin containers, causing the balsamic turpentine essence to darken. Under such conditions, usage is not recommended. A practical approach to prevent this is to fill jars with glass beads to disperse air. Balsamic turpentine essence is effective in dissolving waxes and natural resins such as damar, mastic, and rosin, serving as a historic thinner for oil paints.

The natural Matador Anti-Woodworm expels insects that harm wood, protecting it from infestations of insects and mold. Matador is a natural solution composed of citrus oil and potassium salts, without the presence of harmful biocides for human health and the environment.
SOLD EXCLUSIVELY TO PROFESSIONALS!!!!

Oxalic acid is a chemical compound that finds various applications, including marble cleaning and the removal of light rust patinas from metal objects, especially during the restoration of historical artifacts such as plaques, helmets, and studs.

To lighten wood, oxalic acid is dissolved in water or alcohol and then evenly applied to the wood surface using a brush. It is advisable to use diluted solutions and repeat the application until the desired color tone is achieved. After application, it is important to wash the wood with water and brush to remove any residues. Oxalic acid can cause shiny stains if not completely removed.

To remove rust patinas, the object to be treated is immersed in a solution of warm water and oxalic acid. It is important to avoid excessive acid quantity to prevent yellowing of the artifact, so it is better to proceed gradually. Afterwards, it should be thoroughly rinsed with demineralized water and brushed to remove the rust. To completely eliminate oxalic acid, it is recommended to immerse the object in demineralized water with the addition of baking soda.

In the case of thick rust, it may be preferable to use a rust converter.

It is important to take precautions when using oxalic acid. It should be stored in a well-ventilated area as it can emit toxic vapors.
The most used resin for violins and bows

Rosin is a solid resin derived from the oleo-resin (crude turpentine) exuded by various species of pine tree. Rosin is extracted by heating the oleo-resin to vaporise the essential oils (spirit of turpentine), or through a naphtha solvent process. Rosin is mainly produced in Portugal and Brazil but Indonesia, northern Vietnam, southern China, the US, Mexico and France are also producers.

Rosin is sold as a semi-transparent solid ranging in colour from yellow to black and has a faint odour of pine. The commercial grades range from A (the darkest) to K (yellow red), M (yellow brown) and N (deep yellow), through to superior WG ("Window Glass", yellow) and WW ("Water White", slight yellow) sold here by Grandi Liutai Italiani. Rosin is brittle and easily crumbled at room temperature, but melts at around 100-120 °C and is highly flammable. Rosin dissolves in alcohol, benzene, chloroform and ether. It is also soluble in spirit of turpentine and turpentine substitute.

Our evaluation of Portuguese Clear Rosin flakes

We at Grandi Liutai have evaluated the use of the Portuguese Clear Rosin Flakes - 100 g in our luthier laboratories, and we are very satisfied with the results. We have found that it is a high-quality product with numerous positive characteristics in the production and maintenance of stringed musical instruments. The Portuguese Clear Rosin Flakes - 100 g has proven to be a high-quality product, ideal for producing a clear and crystalline sound in stringed instruments such as violins, cellos, violas, and double basses. We have also noticed that this rosin is suitable for all types of strings, whether steel or gut. Secondly, we evaluated its ease of use. The rosin flakes dissolve easily. Additionally, the consistency of the rosin allows for easy manipulation, making it ideal for hand applications. Thirdly, we evaluated the durability and stability of the rosin. We at Grandi Liutai have found that the Portuguese Clear Rosin Flakes - 100 g maintains its long-term adhesion, even in hot and humid environments. This makes it ideal for industrial applications that require strong long-term adhesion. In summary, our evaluation of the use of the Portuguese Clear Rosin Flakes - 100 g in musical instruments is extremely positive. Its high quality, the consistency of the flakes, durability, and safety in use make it an ideal choice for every musician, whether professional or amateur. We highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a quality rosin for their stringed instrument.

Aloe is a thickened juice derived from the leaves of various Aloe species. It belongs to the Liliaceae family and is indigenous to regions such as southern Africa, Egypt, India, and Mediterranean countries with a similar climate. In commercial trade, Aloe is often named after its place of origin.

The process of extracting Aloe involves extracting the juice by cutting the leaves and allowing it to dry in the air. Alternatively, an Aloe extract can be obtained by boiling the dried leaves and evaporating the resulting decoction. This extract is considered inferior and is primarily used in medicine due to its high concentration of bitter substances.

Two main varieties of Aloe can be distinguished based on their appearance, although there are also mixed forms. The first variety, commonly sourced from Capeland, has a shiny appearance because it is dried over a fire. However, prolonged storage may cause it to melt if it contains a significant amount of salt, which is considered an impurity. The second variety, known as "Leberaloe," has a dull, resinous, leathery brown exterior. Aloe sold under the name "Aloe Mosselbay" is a type of Kapaloe, while Port Elisabeth is another region in South Africa where it is produced but further east.

Aloe contains aloin, an anthraquinone pigment. The percentage of aloin varies between 5% and 40% depending on the variety. Different types of aloin are designated with a prefix corresponding to the origin of the Aloe variety (e.g., Kapaloin). Additionally, aloinosides, which are glycosides of aloin, and aloeemodin are also present. Nitric acid can be used to extract chrysamic acid from Aloe, which appears as yellow leaflets when dried and dissolves in boiling water with a red color.

Chrysamic acid is primarily employed for dyeing wool and silk. When combined with soda ash, untreated wool can be dyed blue or blue-gray, depending on the concentration of the dye bath. The resulting shade of blue is somewhat similar to indigo, but with a slightly reddish hue due to Orseille. In leather dyeing, chrysamic acid was utilized for achieving yellowing effects. Silk can be dyed with chrysamic acid, resulting in shades ranging from purple to rose red, and with a more diluted dye bath, various shades of pink can be obtained. Although chrysamic acid allows for other color variations, it is also commonly referred to as "aloe purple."

Untreated Aloe readily dissolves in warm water and can be used to dye fabrics in yellow and brown tones, although the colors are not very lightfast. Without mordant salts, wool dyed with Aloe appears dark brown, while alum produces a reddish light brown hue. Ferrous sulfate yields maroon colors, and post-treatment with potassium bichromate darkens the browns. Due to the low lightfastness of Aloe-dyed textiles, it is often combined with other dyes. Aloe solutions in nitric acid are also utilized for dyeing wood, resulting in shades of yellow or resembling mahogany.

Product Data Sheet

Product: Aloe capensis, powder

Origin: South Africa

Protected species (CITES): yes

Harvest: wild gathering

Fertilization: no

Time of harvest: April – June

Identity: complies

Cleaning: manually

Drying: drier

Degree of crushing: ground

Pharmacopoeia: complies to Ph.Eur. 2.8.13

Pesticides: complies

Chlorpyrifos and -methyl: < 0.01 mg/kg

Heavy metals: lead, cadmium, mercury: tested

Microbiology: complies to Ph.Eur, herbal medicines, Cat.
Copal can be considered a young form of amber, still in a phase of chemical and physical transformation (amberization). It can be distinguished from amber by its opacity and the presence of numerous insects and other small animals inside. Unlike amber, copal is soluble in substances such as ether or benzene and can be completely dissolved to recover the insects inside.

Copal is extracted from various parts of the world, including Sierra Leone, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Angola, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Philippines, and New Zealand. It is produced by various species of broadleaf plants and occasionally by conifers. For example, Madagascar's copal is produced by a legume still present on the island, Hymenaea verrucosa (copalier). South American copal is produced by various plants in the Burseraceae family, such as Icica icicariba (which produces Brazilian gold copal), Bursera microphylla and Bursera graveolens (which produce black copal), and Protium crassipetalum (which produces white copal). Colombia's copal is produced by another legume in the Santander Department. Finally, the Philippines and New Zealand's copal is produced by a conifer in the Araucariaceae family, Agathis dammara (locally known as Kauri).

Manila Copal Gum comes in resinous masses of varying sizes, with surfaces of more or less dark color and a melting point ranging from 103°C to 120°C. It is soluble in alcohol and insoluble in common solvents.

Manila Copal Gum is soluble in alcohol at a temperature above 94°. After pyrolysis, Manila gum produces a substance soluble in alcohol and allows only small amounts of oil to be added. A solution is obtained that, when mixed with other resins and varnishes, can be used to prepare adhesives, putties, wood varnishes, and as an antique finish for frames, furniture, etc.

After conducting a series of tests in our luthier laboratories, we were very satisfied with the results obtained. Firstly, we found that the Grinepro sandarac resin is a high-quality product, which comes in a solid and transparent resin form. Its consistency makes it easy to apply to the surface of the objects to be protected, and its ability to harden quickly ensures long-term protection. In addition, the transparency of the resin does not alter the natural color of the wood and preserves its beauty. Secondly, we tested the Grinepro sandarac resin for the preparation of varnishes and lacquers. We found that this product has excellent solubility capacity, which means that it can be easily diluted in solvents such as alcohol or turpentine essence for the creation of high-quality varnishes and lacquers. The resin also contributes to giving a greater shine and protection to varnishes and lacquers, ensuring a durable and resistant finish. Finally, Grandi Liutai greatly appreciated the versatility of the Grinepro sandarac resin. This product can be used not only for the protection of furniture and musical instruments but also for the creation of craft and decorative objects, such as frames or boxes. Its ability to preserve the natural color of the wood and to provide a shiny and resistant finish makes it an essential tool for every craftsman. In conclusion, our evaluation of the Grinepro sandarac resin is extremely positive. Its high quality, ease of use, and versatility make it an essential product for every luthier or craftsman. We highly recommend this product to anyone who needs to protect, decorate, or varnish wooden objects.

However, the use of amber Colophony in the preparation of oil paints presents some unique characteristics. Firstly, it is necessary to have a reliable source of high-quality amber, as its purity and properties can vary significantly.
