Extra dark Colophony (rosin), in comparison to light colophony, comprises a higher concentration of essential oils and coloring components. This variant, rich in these elements, is particularly well-suited for crafting violin oil varnishes. Obtaining the dark rosin proves challenging due to the prevailing trend where light rosin is more economically viable. Consequently, a true market for dark rosin is scarce, given the cost-effectiveness of its lighter counterpart.

Fossilized amber, derived from conifers fossilized for millions of years. Among resins, it is the most durable and practically insoluble in all solvents, except for oils in which it is partially soluble when heated. Amber produces a very dark and difficult-to-remove varnish, making it essentially unsuitable for painting techniques.

The most used resin for violins and bows

Rosin is a solid resin derived from the oleo-resin (crude turpentine) exuded by various species of pine tree. Rosin is extracted by heating the oleo-resin to vaporise the essential oils (spirit of turpentine), or through a naphtha solvent process. Rosin is mainly produced in Portugal and Brazil but Indonesia, northern Vietnam, southern China, the US, Mexico and France are also producers.

Rosin is sold as a semi-transparent solid ranging in colour from yellow to black and has a faint odour of pine. The commercial grades range from A (the darkest) to K (yellow red), M (yellow brown) and N (deep yellow), through to superior WG ("Window Glass", yellow) and WW ("Water White", slight yellow) sold here by Grandi Liutai Italiani. Rosin is brittle and easily crumbled at room temperature, but melts at around 100-120 °C and is highly flammable. Rosin dissolves in alcohol, benzene, chloroform and ether. It is also soluble in spirit of turpentine and turpentine substitute.

Our evaluation of Portuguese Clear Rosin flakes

We at Grandi Liutai have evaluated the use of the Portuguese Clear Rosin Flakes - 100 g in our luthier laboratories, and we are very satisfied with the results.
Copal can be considered a young form of amber, still in a phase of chemical and physical transformation (amberization). It can be distinguished from amber by its opacity and the presence of numerous insects and other small animals inside. Unlike amber, copal is soluble in substances such as ether or benzene and can be completely dissolved to recover the insects inside.

Copal is extracted from various parts of the world, including Sierra Leone, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Angola, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Philippines, and New Zealand. It is produced by various species of broadleaf plants and occasionally by conifers. For example, Madagascar's copal is produced by a legume still present on the island, Hymenaea verrucosa (copalier). South American copal is produced by various plants in the Burseraceae family, such as Icica icicariba (which produces Brazilian gold copal), Bursera microphylla and Bursera graveolens (which produce black copal), and Protium crassipetalum (which produces white copal). Colombia's copal is produced by another legume in the Santander Department. Finally, the Philippines and New Zealand's copal is produced by a conifer in the Araucariaceae family, Agathis dammara (locally known as Kauri).

Manila Copal Gum comes in resinous masses of varying sizes, with surfaces of more or less dark color and a melting point ranging from 103°C to 120°C. It is soluble in alcohol and insoluble in common solvents.

Manila Copal Gum is soluble in alcohol at a temperature above 94°. After pyrolysis, Manila gum produces a substance soluble in alcohol and allows only small amounts of oil to be added. A solution is obtained that, when mixed with other resins and varnishes, can be used to prepare adhesives, putties, wood varnishes, and as an antique finish for frames, furniture, etc.

After conducting a series of tests in our luthier laboratories, we were very satisfied with the results obtained. Firstly, we found that the Grinepro sandarac resin is a high-quality product, which comes in a solid and transparent resin form. Its consistency makes it easy to apply to the surface of the objects to be protected, and its ability to harden quickly ensures long-term protection. In addition, the transparency of the resin does not alter the natural color of the wood and preserves its beauty. Secondly, we tested the Grinepro sandarac resin for the preparation of varnishes and lacquers. We found that this product has excellent solubility capacity, which means that it can be easily diluted in solvents such as alcohol or turpentine essence for the creation of high-quality varnishes and lacquers. The resin also contributes to giving a greater shine and protection to varnishes and lacquers, ensuring a durable and resistant finish. Finally, Grandi Liutai greatly appreciated the versatility of the Grinepro sandarac resin. This product can be used not only for the protection of furniture and musical instruments but also for the creation of craft and decorative objects, such as frames or boxes. Its ability to preserve the natural color of the wood and to provide a shiny and resistant finish makes it an essential tool for every craftsman. In conclusion, our evaluation of the Grinepro sandarac resin is extremely positive. Its high quality, ease of use, and versatility make it an essential product for every luthier or craftsman. We highly recommend this product to anyone who needs to protect, decorate, or varnish wooden objects.

After the crude lac is gathered from the tree, it is crushed and graded and the largest particles are called "Seedlac". This set of small selected natural “golden gems” is simply cold washed to eliminate dust and wood residues and to keep intact the characteristics of the native resin such as the colour and the waxy component. However, the use of amber Colophony in the preparation of oil paints presents some unique characteristics. Firstly, it is necessary to have a reliable source of high-quality amber, as its purity and properties can vary significantly. We have found that the processing of amber Colophony can be complicated and require the use of specialized equipment. Despite these disadvantages, we have seen that the use of pyrolyzed amber can bring numerous advantages in the preparation of high-quality oil paints. Paints containing pyrolyzed amber have greater wear resistance, adhesion, and durability over traditional oil paints. In addition, amber Colophony can improve the transparency and brightness of the paint, giving paintings a more vibrant and brilliant appearance.

 1. Triturare l'ambra pirogenata in polvere fine.
 2. Aggiungere la polvere di ambra in una soluzione di olio di lino e terebinto, in proporzioni variabili a seconda della consistenza desiderata.
 3. Riscaldare la soluzione a bagnomaria fino a quando la resina si scioglie completamente.
 4. Raffreddare la vernice e utilizzarla come desiderato.

Questa vernice può essere utilizzata per creare un effetto lucido e traslucido su superfici in legno, metallo, pietra o altri material
