    <p>Oxalic acid is a chemical compound that finds various applications, including marble cleaning and the removal of light rust patinas from metal objects, especially during the restoration of historical artifacts such as plaques, helmets, and studs.</p> <p>To lighten wood, oxalic acid is dissolved in water or alcohol and then evenly applied to the wood surface using a brush. It is advisable to use diluted solutions and repeat the application until the desired color tone is achieved. After application, it is important to wash the wood with water and brush to remove any residues. Oxalic acid can cause shiny stains if not completely removed.</p> <p>To remove rust patinas, the object to be treated is immersed in a solution of warm water and oxalic acid. It is important to avoid excessive acid quantity to prevent yellowing of the artifact, so it is better to proceed gradually. Afterwards, it should be thoroughly rinsed with demineralized water and brushed to remove the rust. To completely eliminate oxalic acid, it is recommended to immerse the object in demineralized water with the addition of baking soda.</p> <p>In the case of thick rust, it may be preferable to use a rust converter.</p> <p>It is important to take precautions when using oxalic acid. It should be stored in a well-ventilated area as it can emit toxic vapors.     <p>Copal can be considered a young form of amber, still in a phase of chemical and physical transformation (amberization). It can be distinguished from amber by its opacity and the presence of numerous insects and other small animals inside. Unlike amber, copal is soluble in substances such as ether or benzene and can be completely dissolved to recover the insects inside.</p> <p></p> <p>Copal is extracted from various parts of the world, including Sierra Leone, Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Angola, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Philippines, and New Zealand. It is produced by various species of broadleaf plants and occasionally by conifers. For example, Madagascar's copal is produced by a legume still present on the island, Hymenaea verrucosa (copalier). South American copal is produced by various plants in the Burseraceae family, such as Icica icicariba (which produces Brazilian gold copal), Bursera microphylla and Bursera graveolens (which produce black copal), and Protium crassipetalum (which produces white copal). Colombia's copal is produced by another legume in the Santander Department. Finally, the Philippines and New Zealand's copal is produced by a conifer in the Araucariaceae family, Agathis dammara (locally known as Kauri).</p> <p></p> <p>Manila Copal Gum comes in resinous masses of varying sizes, with surfaces of more or less dark color and a melting point ranging from 103°C to 120°C. It is soluble in alcohol and insoluble in common solvents.</p> <p></p> <p>Manila Copal Gum is soluble in alcohol at a temperature above 94°. After pyrolysis, Manila gum produces a substance soluble in alcohol and allows only small amounts of oil to be added. A solution is obtained that, when mixed with other resins and varnishes, can be used to prepare adhesives, putties, wood varnishes, and as an antique finish for frames, furniture, etc.</p>

    <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="en-gb" xml:lang="en-gb">Sandracca is a natural resin obtained from the Juniperus comunis shrub.</span></p> <p>It is a shellac-like resin, but much clearer, and is used as a final varnish for lacquered furniture or as a varnish additive.</p> <p>With this resin we obtain a film of high gloss and hardness and good adhesion.</p> <p>Sandracca can also be used in some varnishes as a substitute for shellac due to the need to have a finish that does not alter the colour of the wood, especially light ones.</p> <h3>Our evaluation of the Grinepro sandarac resin</h3> <p>At <strong>Grandi Liutai</strong>, we recently evaluated the Grinepro sandarac resin for the protection of furniture and musical instruments, as well as its usefulness in the preparation of varnishes and lacquers. After conducting a series of tests in our luthier laboratories, we were very satisfied with the results obtained. Firstly, we found that the Grinepro sandarac resin is a high-quality product, which comes in a solid and transparent resin form. Its consistency makes it easy to apply to the surface of the objects to be protected, and its ability to harden quickly ensures long-term protection. In addition, the transparency of the resin does not alter the natural color of the wood and preserves its beauty. Secondly, we tested the Grinepro sandarac resin for the preparation of varnishes and lacquers. We found that this product has excellent solubility capacity, which means that it can be easily diluted in solvents such as alcohol or turpentine essence for the creation of high-quality varnishes and lacquers. The resin also contributes to giving a greater shine and protection to varnishes and lacquers, ensuring a durable and resistant finish. Finally, Grandi Liutai greatly appreciated the versatility of the Grinepro sandarac resin. This product can be used not only for the protection of furniture and musical instruments but also for the creation of craft and decorative objects, such as frames or boxes.     <h2>The most used resin for violins and bows</h2> <p>Rosin is a solid resin derived from the oleo-resin (crude turpentine) exuded by various species of pine tree. Rosin is extracted by heating the oleo-resin to vaporise the essential oils (spirit of turpentine), or through a naphtha solvent process. Rosin is mainly produced in Portugal and Brazil but Indonesia, northern Vietnam, southern China, the US, Mexico and France are also producers.</p> <p>Rosin is sold as a semi-transparent solid ranging in colour from yellow to black and has a faint odour of pine. The commercial grades range from A (the darkest) to K (yellow red), M (yellow brown) and N (deep yellow), through to superior WG ("Window Glass", yellow) and WW ("Water White", slight yellow) sold here by Grandi Liutai Italiani. Rosin is brittle and easily crumbled at room temperature, but melts at around 100-120 °C and is highly flammable. Rosin dissolves in alcohol, benzene, chloroform and ether. It is also soluble in spirit of turpentine and turpentine substitute.</p> <h3>Our evaluation of Portuguese Clear Rosin flakes</h3> <p>We at <strong>Grandi Liutai</strong> have evaluated the use of the Portuguese Clear Rosin Flakes - 100 g in our luthier laboratories, and we are very satisfied with the results.
