Nagura – Auxiliary Stones for Precision Sharpening

Nagura stones are used in traditional Japanese sharpening to generate an abrasive slurry on the surface of finishing stones. This slurry enhances the sharpening process, allowing for a finer and more controlled edge.

Types of Nagura

• Mikawa Nagura: Originating from Aichi Prefecture, with an estimated grit around 3000. Ideal for creating a fine slurry on finishing stones.
• Tsushima Nagura: Extracted from a submerged mine on Tsushima Island, these gray-black stones are harder and suitable for medium to fine-grit stones, especially hard ones.
• Gujo Nagura: From Gifu Prefecture, these softer stones exhibit variations in crystal structure and are ideal for refining the edge.

Nagura stones are compatible with both natural and synthetic stones and are particularly effective on hard, fine-grit stones.

Using Nagura Stones

To use a Nagura, lightly rub it on the wet surface of the sharpening stone to create an abrasive slurry. This process enhances the sharpening effectiveness and contributes to a finer blade finish.
