Buying Tone-wood on Grandi Liutai Italiani website is the best way to take advantage of a very scrupulous selection made by our luthiers in our warehouse in Cremona where over 10 thousand violin sets are stored to season.

Each piece comes from a specific geographical area, and it is cut with a system that respects the natural growth of each plant and enhances its acoustic and aesthetic qualities.

Each piece is classified according to the specific weight, the regularity of the grain and the depth and distribution of the flame.

For example, a piece of Master class maple will be very light, it will have a straight and very regular grain, very deep flame and well distributed throughout the piece.

Wood for String Instruments

 • Violin

Buy the best maple trees for violin making online

The ancient Cremonese violins were built with maple from the Balkans and spruce from the Italian Alps. For over 20 years, Grandi Liutai Italiani has been traveling to Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro to select the best maple trees for making violins. Although the violin is a small instrument, it needs a very light wood but at the same time very rich in medullary rays which make it rigid in a transversal sense. The right combination of lightness and rapid sound transmission make the wood of Grandi Liutai Italiani the favourite of some of the best professional luthiers for the making of their violins.

Here is the best selection of woods chosen by professional luthiers

 • Viola

Online sale of wood to build violets

The wood used by luthiers to make violas is often very different from the one they use for violins. Although it is always Balkan Maple and Italian Spruce, this instrument requires much lighter wood often with less tight grain which increases a certain elasticity and accentuate the typical warm and harmonious sound of the viola.

Here is the best selection of woods: Maple from the Balkans and Spruce from the Italian Alps

 • Cello

Online sale of wood to build cellos

It is rare that a trunk reaches such a diameter to allow us to cut backs or tops for cello. However, by some fortuitous coincidence some plants resist adversity for hundreds of years and reach 80 centimetres in diameter, a measure beyond which it is possible to obtain material for cello. Grandi Liutai Italiani have always been committed to cutting logs in the forest in a responsible manner and we buy the lots exclusively from the Forest Departments of the various Governments. This means that each plant is cut to promote life in the forest and the spontaneous growth of new individuals that will strengthen the local genetic heritage. The selective felling of plants for commercial purposes and the repopulation with non-native plants has created immense damage to all the forests where we operate, so we are very strict in avoiding buying plants from companies or individuals. The nobile art of the luthier has always been linked with the search for the right material. Consequently, those who, like us, deal with the forest and sawmill work must be aware that a possible mistake at the base could weigh on the whole community of future luthiers, who without the right material may not be able to make their instruments sound as they should.

Here is the best selection of woods for building cellos

Willow has been chosen for its acoustic characteristics and workability. Here are some of the main reasons:

Acoustics: Willow wood is renowned for its excellent acoustic properties. It possesses a good sound transmission capacity and a favorable sound response. These qualities are extremely important for the cello's back plates as they contribute to generating the desired tone and projection of the instrument.

Flexibility: Willow wood is flexible and can be easily shaped by luthiers to achieve the desired shape and thickness. Flexibility is crucial for sculpting the back plates so they resonate harmoniously with the other parts of the cello.

Lightweight: The back plates need to be light to allow the cello to vibrate freely and produce high-quality sound. Willow wood is lightweight but durable enough to withstand the stresses a cello undergoes during play.

Availability: Willow wood is readily available in many regions, making it easier for luthiers to source.

History and Tradition: The luthier tradition has used willow wood for centuries, and it has been proven to work well for building cellos and other bowed instruments. Luthiers often adhere to tradition to ensure the sound quality of the instruments they construct.

In summary, willow wood is a traditional and popular choice for making the back plates of cellos due to its exceptional acoustic qualities, workability, and durability, as well as its historical significance in lutherie. These qualities contribute to the creation of an instrument with a rich and full sound.

Blocks are important elements in the construction of violins, playing a crucial role in the structure and optimization of the instrument's sound. Blocks can be made from different types of wood, but the most common are spruce and willow.

Spruce blocks are often used in violins because this type of wood has good resistance and uniform density, allowing for the even transmission of string vibrations.

Willow is known for its flexibility and strength, making it an excellent choice for violin blocks. Additionally, willow has the ability to transmit vibrations evenly, allowing for better response to lower notes.

The choice of one or the other depends on the preferences of the luthier and the desired sound result.

Blocks are important elements in the construction of violas, playing a crucial role in the structure and optimization of the instrument's sound. Blocks can be made from different types of wood, but the most common are spruce and willow.

Spruce blocks are often used in violas because this type of wood has good resistance and uniform density, allowing for the even transmission of string vibrations.

Willow is known for its flexibility and strength, making it an excellent choice for violin blocks. Additionally, willow has the ability to transmit vibrations evenly, allowing for better response to lower notes.

The choice of one or the other depends on the preferences of the luthier and the desired sound result.
